Q: What location did you pick to have your wedding and why did you choose this place?

“Because our faith is very important to us, we had our wedding ceremony at the Church of the Holy Angels, where we attend every Sunday. We love this parish because of its a warm and welcoming atmosphere, simple architectural style, fantastic priests, beautiful music ministry and important social justice work. Our reception was outdoors in a tent inside the courtyard of the Welshfield Inn, located near our church. Not only did this venue match the relaxed natural style we were seeking, with affordable and seasonal menu options, but we also have sentimental connections to this location! Andy and I first met when we were both in the wedding party of mutual friends, who had their reception at Welshfield. Andy’s parents also had their reception here! It seemed serendipitous when they had availability in September.”

Q: Did you have a particular theme or color scheme? Is there a story behind this color theme and why you chose it?

“Our wedding had a colorful vintage theme. I knew I wanted to shop for my dress at an amazing shop in Cleveland run by a local fashion-school grad and really kind human being: Miranda’s Vintage Bridal. After I picked a gown from the late 1950s/early 1960s that Miranda thought was inspired by Grace Kelly’s wedding dress, we started gravitating towards a vintage theme overall. Andy’s suit was a three piece tweed from Walker Slater, a nod to traditional British style. My family and I love antiquing, so we all pitched in and spent the summer sorting through antique markets and our own homes to find old books, silver trays, candle holders, rustic boxes, vases, and more to add to the decor. I am also a huge fan of bright colors, and marigold yellow is one that I thought would fit with the beautiful Ohio maple trees that are ablaze in the fall, while being a bit unexpected and unique for the season. It is such a happy color, it fit in so well with the joy of the day — and we ended up finding it all over, from the inn where we got ready to the park where we took our bridal party portraits. We made sure to source a variety of colors in our flowers to keep the palette interesting and connect the yellow to darker autumn hues of the season.”

Q: What was the best/most memorable part of the day?

“It was all so wonderful, it really is hard to choose. I loved the ceremony, where we got to soak in the real commitment we were making to each other in a beautiful and sacred environment, which combined both traditional and personal elements. It was amazing to say time-honored vows to each other and to customize the service with readings, hymns, and rituals that fit our values, our spirituality, and our relationship. Andy also loved our bridal party portrait session in Century Village, a historical park in his hometown where we sometimes go for walks. The weather was idyllic — sunny, cool, and crisp, the historical and rustic nature of the park fit our vibe, and we got to spend time soaking in the giddiness of the day with each other and our closest friends. Working with our photographer, Maria Sharp, was amazing — she really became our friend and encouraged us to be totally comfortable and completely ourselves while quietly capturing the most stunning photos that captured so much genuine emotion.”

Q: Why did you choose Azazie for your bridesmaids?

“I wanted my bridesmaids to be able to pick their own dresses in a style and price range that suited them — but my friends were having trouble finding much, as autumn-toned yellows can be hard to find — especially in longer lengths. Once we found the marigold hue that Azazie offered, and I fell in love with the color swatch, everyone was happy with the dozens of affordable options available. I found the color to be really flattering on a variety of skin tones. It was cool to see everyone pick a different style — my maid of honor even wore a dress with a touch of white lace on the bodice to distinguish her role. It fit in really well with the lace on my own dress!”

Q: Any tips or advice for anyone getting married soon?

“Simplify everything as much as possible. Keep your focus on what matters — the commitment you are making! Your wedding is only one day, and it doesn’t have to be perfect or impress anyone, despite the pressure you might feel from Pinterest or wedding blogs. We picked a few priorities that were important to us — a meaningful ceremony and a talented photographer to capture the memories — and everything else we tried to keep simple. Thanks to many generous family members and friends who helped us DIY everything from the programs to the centerpieces to the lights in the tent — as well as small businesses run by helpful owners who believe in reasonable prices, we (mostly) succeeded.”

Q: Did you enjoy the wedding planning process? Why or why not?

“Yes. We got to enlist so many great vendors and small businesses that were always kind, easy to work with, and accommodating of special requests that made the day filled with personal touches. We are also blessed by so many family members and friends that pitched in to make the wedding planning process easy on us. They worked really hard and had so many great ideas to help make our day so special.”

Q: Where did you find/hear about Azazie?

“I was scouring the web for weeks trying to find a beautiful shade of yellow that my friends would feel good about wearing. When I found Azazie and saw the marigold hue featured in “real life photos,” I could see that it was the warm, golden shade we were hoping to find. Thanks, Google.”
